Es wurde ein schwacher Zusammenhang zwischen beruflicher Exposition bei niederfrequenten Magnetfeldern und dem Risiko für amyotrophe Lateralsklerose gefunden (RR 1,20; KI 1,05-1,38). Es wurde kein Zusammenhang zwischen beruflicher Exposition bei Stromschlägen und dem Risiko für amyotrophe Lateralsklerose beobachtet (RR 0,97; KI 0,80-1,17). Für Elektroberufe wurde ein erhöhtes Risiko für amyotrophe Lateralsklerose (RR 1,22; KI 1,04-1,43) gefunden, jedoch nicht bei Schweißern, Lokomotivführern und Nähmaschinen-Bedienern.
Die Autoren schlussfolgerten, dass eine berufliche Exposition bei niederfrequenten Magnetfeldern, aber nicht bei Stromschlägen, ein Risikofaktor für amyotrophe Lateralsklerose sein könnte. Aufgrund der mäßigen bis hohen Heterogenität und einem möglichen Publikationsbias sollten die Ergebnisse jedoch mit Vorsicht interpretiert werden.
