The slight buzzing of the phone was covered up by an additional background sound of the same pulse frequency, generated in the laboratory.
Aufbau
The mobile phone was mounted to the right side of the head in a typical use position. It was turned on during the whole investigation and was switched from the EMF to the sham mode by radio control. A 1.5-cm thick layer of foam material was positioned between the phone and the head to prevent any influence of the heat produced by the phone.
All volunteers underwent a single-blind, placebo-controlled protocol once on each of two different days. Each investigation included two successive 50-min periods of EMF and sham exposure, given in a randomized order and separated by a 15-min interval. On the second measurement day, the order of exposure type for each subject was reversed.
