The effects of exposure of carps to different 50 Hz magnetic fields of varying strength on brain histopathology should be investigated.
200 healthy common carps (Cyprinus carpio) were divided into the following groups (n=10 each): exposure to a magnetic field of 1) 0.1 mT for 0.5 hours, 2) 0.1 mT for 1 h, 3) 1 mT for 0.5 h, 4) 1 mT for 1 hour, 5) 3 mT for 0.5 h, 6) 3 mT for 1 hour, 7) 5 mT for 0.5 h, 8) 5 mT for 1 h, 9) 7 mT for 0.5 h, 10) 7 mT for 1 h. For each group, a separate sham exposure group was used.
After (sham) exposure, fish were returned to their aquaria for 2 weeks.

No pathologic changes were observed at magnetic flux densities of 0.1 and 1 mT regardless of the exposure duration (groups 1-4).
Starting with a magnetic flux density of 3 mT for 0.5 h (group 5), brain slices showed increasing histopathological changes with increasing magnetic flux density and exposure duration.
At 3 mT (groups 5 and 6), signs of gliosis were found. At 5 mT (groups 7 and 8), lesions increased, showing infiltration of lymphocytic cells and edema. Finally at 7 mT (groups 9 and 10), advanced forms of findings of the previous groups and necrosis were found.
The authors conclude that exposure of carps to a 50 Hz magnetic field of 3 mT and more might induce histopathological changes in the brain depending on the magnetic flux density and the exposure duration.
