The effects of exposure of rats to a 50 Hz magnetic field or pentoxifylline and the effects of co-exposure on bone fracture healing should be investigated.
Pentoxifylline is a phosphodiesterase inhibitor, which has a positive effect on bone formation. Consequentially, a positive effect on bone fracture healing was hypothesized.
80 male rats with an experimental femur fracture were randomly divided into the following groups (n=20 each): 1) exposure to the magnetic field, 2) intraperitoneal injection of pentoxifylline (50 mg/kg/day), 3) co-exposure to the magnetic field and pentoxifylline, 4) control group (no exposure). After 21 days and 30 days, 10 rats of each group were killed and investigated, respectively. Four slides from each fracture were examined.
