To investigate the effects of an exposure of seeds and sugar solutions to a static magnetic field on the growth of wheat coleoptiles (protective sheath covering the emerging shoot in monocotyledons).
Dry wheat seeds were exposed to a static magnetic field or left without treatment. Afterwards, seeds (n= 50 per petri dish) were placed on moist filter paper for germination. After 24 or 48 hours, coleoptiles (2 mm) were excised and put on filter paper saturated with water or exposed sugar solution (sucrose or maltose, 2% respectively). After a further incubation period of 24, 48 or 72 hours, the length of the coleoptiles was determined.

After an incubation period of 24, 48 and 72 hours, coleoptiles from exposed seeds showed a significantly enhanced increase in the length compared to coleoptiles from untreated seeds. Additionally, treatment of the coleoptiles with exposed sucrose solution led to a significant increase in the length of the coleoptiles after 48 and 72 hours in comparison to the coleoptiles only treated with water, while treatment of the coleoptiles with exposed maltose solution significantly increased the length after 24 hours (remark EMF-Portal: no data given for 72 hours).
The authors conclude that exposure of seeds and sugar solution to a static magnetic field could enhance the growth of wheat coleoptiles.
