To examine the potential effects of electromagnetic fields from mobile phones on the human brain activity.
Twenty male subjects were examined in this study. First, an electroencephalogram (EEG) was recorded for 15 minutes without a mobile phone (baseline). After a 15 minute rest, the subject was exposed to the electromagnetic field of a mobile phone, which he held at the right ear for 15 minutes and the EEG was recorded. After an additional rest for 15 minutes, the left ear was exposed for 15 minutes and meanwhile the EEG was recorded.
Remark EMF-Portal: not clear if mobile phone was off, in standby, or in speaking mode and if subjects were speaking or silent
Remark EMF-Portal: No statistical significance of results given in the article.
During mobile phone exposure, total power of beta waves was less compared to the base line without exposure. However, power contributions of upper betawaves were more compared to lower band with exposure (also compared to baseline?). Additionally, the total power of beta waves was higher when the mobile phone was used on the right ear in comparison to usage on the left ear.
The authors conclude that exposure to mobile phones increased the awareness of the brain and they advise to use the mobile phone on the left ear.
