Physiology. Cell-surface proteins that bind epinephrine and norepinephrine and trigger intracellular changes. There are two major classes of adrenoceptors, alpha-adrenergic and beta-adrenergic receptors. Adrenoceptors also bind drugs that mimic the effects of stimulating postganglionic adrenergic sympathetic nerves(sympathomimetics) or that inhibit the actions of the sympathetic nervous system by any mechanism (sympatholytics).
