Cell biology. A transmembrane protein involved in regulation of cell growth and differentiation. The receptor binds to the epidermal growth factor (EGF) which causes activation of signal transduction in the cell. EGF receptors are found at very high levels on the surface of many types of cancer cells, so these cells may divide excessively in the presence of epidermal growth factor.
