Molecular genetics. 1. Bcl-2 proteins are located in the mitochondrial membrane and inhibit programmed cell death (apoptosis). Overexpression of bcl-2 proteins due to a translocation of the bcl-2 gene is associated with follicular lymphoma.
2. The proto-oncogene bcl-2 encodes the protein Bcl-2.
3. The members of the Bcl-2 family are proteins that regulate apoptosis, either inhibiting (e.g. Bcl-2) or promoting (e.g. Bax) programmed cell death.
Notation: bcl-2 (italics) refers to the gene, Bcl-2 (first letter capitalized) to the protein.
