Cell biology. An active process requiring metabolic activity by the dying cell, characterised by enzymatic degradation of the cell's DNA and proteins without inflammatory responses. Apoptosis is induced by several factors not yet understood totally. It is interpreted as protection of the organism by removing damaged, useless or overaged cells.
