Physiology. A natural periodic state of rest for the mind and body during the circadian rhythm. Sleep is necessary to regenerate the body. The muscles are relaxed, consciousness is lost, and pulse and respiration frequency are decreased. During sleep the brain undergoes a characteristic cycle of brain-wave activity that can be monitored by electroencephalogram (EEG).
