Study type: Medical/biological study (experimental study)

Effects of cell phone radiation on lipid peroxidation, glutathione and nitric oxide levels in mouse brain during epileptic seizure med./bio.

Published in: J Chem Neuroanat 2016; 75 Pt B: 111-115

Aim of study (acc. to author)

The effects of exposure of mice to a 900 MHz electromagnetic field on oxidative stress in the brain during an epileptic seizure should be investigated.

Background/further details

Epileptic seizures were experimentally induced via intraperitoneal administration of 60 mg/kg body weight pentylenetetrazol (PTZ).
Mice were divided into the following groups (n=9 each): 1) 15 min EMF exposure + PTZ treatment + 30 min EMF exposure, 2) 30 min EMF exposure + PTZ treatment + 30 min EMF exposure and 3) sham exposure for 30 min + PTZ treatment + 30 min sham exposure.

Main outcome of study (acc. to author)

Lipid peroxidation and the total nitric oxide level in the brain were significantly increased in both exposure groups (groups 1 and 2) compared to the sham exposure group (group 3). Moreover, glutathione levels were significantly lower in both exposure groups compared to the sham exposure group. However, no statistically significant differences were noted between the exposure groups.
The authors conclude that exposure of mice to a 900 MHz electromagnetic field might increase oxidative stress in the brain during an epileptic seizure.
