Chemistry. NH3. An irritating, colourless gas which is extremely soluble in water (alkaline reaction). In animals, ammonia is formed as an end product of protein metabolism, it is transformed into urea by the liver and excreted by the kidneys. Industrially, ammonia is synthesized of nitrogen and hydrogen gases and used in ihe production of fertilizers, as a cleaning agent, and as a refrigerant.
