Electricity. A corona discharge is an electrical discharge that is produced by ionisation of an electrically non-conductive fluid (e.g., air) around electrical conductors.
Corona discharges can occur along high-voltage overhead lines and produce corana ions. Corona discharges cause a small part of the undesired transmission losses and are accompanied by a faint luminescent glow (corona) as well as a hissing sound.
