Biochemistry. A protein produced by the liver in response to inflammation, infection or tissue damage. C-reactive protein is one of the plasma proteins known as acute-phase proteins of the immune system. The level of C-reactive protein increases rapidly in response to inflammation. It activates the complement system and promotes phagocytosis by macrophages.
