Sodium chloride plays an important biological role in maintaining the osmotic tension of blood and tissues. A physiological salt solution (isotonic salt solution) is an aqueous solution of 0.9 % sodium chloride which is used in medicine as infusion to compensate fluid and electrolytes depletion and as a solvent for drugs.
