Biochemistry. Abbr. NAC. The acetylated form of the amino acid L-cysteine. It is a precursor of glutathione, a powerful antioxidant and involved in the reduction of reactive oxygen species. Acetylcysteine is used as a mucolytic agent to reduce the viscosity of mucous secretions.
