Histology. Named after Paul Langerhans, 1847 - 1888. Cell clusters in the pancreas that form the endocrine part of that organ. There are four major cell types secreting different hormones. The most abundant beta cells (65-80 %) secrete insulin, alpha cells (5-20 %) secrete glucagon, PP cells (10-35 %) secrete pancreatic polypeptide and delta cells (~5 %) secrete somatostatin.
