Anatomy. A nodular organ in the upper part of the human abdomen that contains a mixture of endocrine and exocrine glands.
The endocrine part consists of the islets of Langerhans, which produces insulin, glucagon, and somatostatin; all three of these hormones are secreted directly into the bloodstream. The exocrine part produces and secretes into the duodenum pancreatic juice, which contains several digestive enzymes.
