Molecular genetics. 1. c-Myc proteins are cellular DNA-binding proteins. They are produced by the myc genes in response to cell stimuli. The transcription factor c-Myc is involved in cell growth and differentiation. Overexpression of Myc proteins leads to elevated proliferation that can cause tumorigenesis.
2. Proto-oncogene myc is one of the immediate early genes that are expressed in absence of de novo protein synthesis.
Notation: myc (italics) refers to the gene, Myc (first letter capitalized) to the protein. Prefix c- denotes the cellular form compared to v-, the viral form.
