Genetics. A detectable and heritable change in the genetic material, occuring spontaneously or induced by external factors (mutagens). There are different types of mutation: single-gene mutations (affecting only one gene), chromosome mutations (structural changes in one chromosome) and changes in the number of chromosomes (e.g. trisomy of a chromosome or aneuploidy).
