Virology. Bacteriophage lambda(λ) is a temperate DNA virus, that affects E. coli. The genetic material consists of a linear double-stranded DNA molecule with 5' twelve-base-pair sticky ends, known as cos sites, which permit circularisation of the DNA molecule on infection. It is used as a cloning vector in molecular biology.
