Study type: Medical/biological study (experimental study)

No mutagenic or recombinogenic effects of mobile phone fields at 900 MHz detected in the yeast saccharomyces cerevisiae med./bio.

Published in: Bioelectromagnetics 2000; 21 (7): 515-523

Aim of study (acc. to author)

To evaluate potential effects of mobile phone fields on mutagenesis and genomic stability in the presence and absence of genotoxic stress (induced by the alkylating agent methyl methanesulfonate).

Exposure

Exposure Parameters
Exposure 1: 900 MHz
Modulation type: pulsed
Exposure duration: continuous for 1 h
  • SAR: 0.13 W/kg
Exposure 2: 900 MHz
Modulation type: pulsed
Exposure duration: continuous for 36 h
  • SAR: 1.3 W/kg

Exposure 1

Main characteristics
Frequency 900 MHz
Type
Exposure duration continuous for 1 h
Modulation
Modulation type pulsed
Pulse width 0.577 ms
Duty cycle 12.5 %
Repetition frequency 217 Hz
Exposure setup
Exposure source
  • see details
Distance between exposed object and exposure source 45 cm
Chamber The exposure system consisted of two identical anechoic test chambers with dimensions of 1.2 x 1.2 x 1.2 m built as Faraday chambers with the inside walls fully covered with absorbing material. The antenna was at a distance of 45 cm, the E and H fields were parallel to the horizontal plane.
Setup As many as 16 square 10 x 10 cm Petri dishes could be exposed simultaneously.
Sham exposure A sham exposure was conducted.
Additional info The signal was generated by a GSM data generator and a power amplifier and controlled by a power meter. All exposure experiments were accompanied by a concurrent non-exposure control (side-by-side chambers).
