Study type: Epidemiological study (observational study)

Case-control study of childhood cancer and exposure to 60-Hz magnetic fields epidem.

Published in: Am J Epidemiol 1988; 128 (1): 21-38

Aim of study (acc. to author)

A case-control study was conducted in the USA to investigate the relation between residential exposure to magnetic fields and the development of childhood cancer.

Further details

Electric and magnetic fields exposure was assessed by measurements in the residence where the child lived prior diagnosis and by wire configuration code.

Results (acc. to author)

Measurements of electric and magnetic fields were taken at 128 residences of cases and in 207 of controls, wire codes were obtained for 319 cases and 259 controls.
A modest association for childhood cancer and magnetic fields measured under low power conditions was observed whereas no association for magnetic fields measured under high power conditions was found. Electric fields were not related to childhood cancer. An increased risk for all types of cancer was observed for high and very high wire codes.
