Application of Weak Sinusoidal Magnetic Field on Flavobacterium Species in the Treatment of Paper Mill Effluent med./bio.

Published in: Electromagn Biol Med 2004; 23 (3): 215-227

Aim of study (acc. to author)

The efficacy of Flavobacterium species exposed to static magnetic field in treatment of the effluent is tested for its ability for bioremediation of lignin rich effluents from paper and pulp mills.

Exposure duration repeated daily exposure, 5 h/day for 3, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18 and 20 days
Exposure setup
Exposure source
Setup 120 flasks were placed in the center of the disc shaped enclosure made by the coil system.
Additional info The coil system consisted of 2 pairs circular coils. The inner pair had a larger diameter and the outer pair had a smaller diameter. Both pairs were mounted co-planar and co-axially which provided a disc shaped volume with highly uniform magnetic field. The coils were kept with their axis vertical so that the axis of the magnetic field passed the test objects vertically. Controls were performed but no details regarding its setup are provided in the article.

Main outcome of study (acc. to author)

Flavobacterium species were found to have a four fold increase with respect to growth when exposed to static magnetic field of 10 Hz, 100 nT for 30 hours (5 hours per day for 6 days). The biological oxygen demand, chemical oxygen demand, lignin, phenol and protein content were found reduced in the effluent using static magnetic field treated cells.
