Anatomy. Part of the diencephalon, including the pituitary gland and various centres that control major functions of the vegetative nervous system. These functions include the regulation of body temperature, circadian rhythm, blood pressure, respiration, appetite, fat metabolism, fluid content, sexual function, etc. The hypothalamus further synthesizes a number of endocrine compounds, e.g. corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH).
