Zoology. An animal in an early developmental stage following the egg in the life cycle of insects, amphibians, worms, and other metamorphosing animals. Larvae differ in form, appearence, living environment and way of life from those of adults. They go through a process of metamorphosis in phenotypic changing to adults. Tadpoles are for example the larvae of frogs and toads.
