Biochemistry. Any of several fat-soluble substances with different side chain length. Ubiquinone with the side chain length of 10 units, also called coenzyme Q10, is found predominantly in the mitochondria of living cells. It serves as an electron carrier in the electron transport chain; in this process ubiquinone is reversibly reduced to ubiquinol by uptake of two electrons and two protons.
