Regression toward the mean refers to the statistical phenomenon that a variable that is extreme on its first measurement will tend to be closer to the center of the distribution on a later measurement. The net effect of regression toward the mean is that the lower measurements in the first test tend to be higher in the second test, and the higher measurements in the first test tend to be lower in the second test.
