Communications engineering. WiFi is a registered trademark of the producer consortium Wi-Fi-Alliance, founded in 1999. It is a wireless transmission technique based on the IEEE standard 802.11 and works in the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz band. WiFi was developed for the use in local area networks with a range of up to 200 m. In some countries WiFi is used as a synonym for WLAN.
