Physiology. The quantity of gas exhaled from the lungs per minute. It is calculated by taking the tidal volume (the volume of gas inhaled and exhaled during one respiratory cycle) and multiplying it by the respiratory rate (the number of breaths per minute). A normal respiratory minute volume is about 6-8 liters per minute.
