Physiology. The synthesis by plants of organic compounds, especially carbohydrates from carbon dioxide and water using light energy. Oxygen is released during this process. Photosynthesis comprises two separate processes: the light reactions and the dark reactions. Chloroplasts containing the pigment chlorophyll are the place of photosynthesis in plant cells.
