Medicine. A disease process in which deposits of plaques containing cholesterol, other lipids material, and blood clots are formed on the inner walls of arteries. These plaques reduce the inside diameter of the arteries leading to a loss of the elasticity of the walls. Atherosclerosis is the most common cause for cardiovascular diseases.
