Biology. An outbred strain of albino rat developed at the Wistar Institute in Philadelphia, USA. It is the first rat strain to serve as a model organism in medical and biological research. Wistar rat strain shows a low incidence of spontaneous tumors. The tail of a Wistar rat is always shorter than its body. The Sprague-Dawley strain was bred from Wistar rats.
