1. Molecular biology. The transfer of a gene from one bacterium to another by a bacteriophage. By incorporating this gene into the genome the recipient acquires new properties. The technique of transduction is used in genetic engineering.
2. Physiology. The conversion of a signal from one form to another, e.g. various types of sensory cells convert light, pressure, chemicals, etc. into nerve impulses.
