Enzymology. A subfamily of the mitogen-activated protein kinases that plays an important role in signal transduction and regulates a variety of cellular processes including cell growth, cell differentiation, apoptosis and cellular responses to inflammation. The P38 MAP kinases are regulated by cytokines. They belong together with JNK mitogen-activated protein kinases to the group of stress-activated protein kinases.
