Epidemiology. The ratio of the mortality (deaths in a time interval) in the population examined to that in the whole population, after taking account (standardizing) of differences in sex and age.
SMR of 1 indicates that the number of observed deaths corresponds to the number of expected deaths. SMR greater than 1 indicates more observed deaths (higher mortality), SMR below 1 less observed deaths than expected.
