Anatomy. The outer covering of the body that protects it from the environment. It is composed of the epidermis and the dermis. The skin has several functions: regulation of body temperature, protection against ultraviolet radiation of the sun, barrier against injury and infection, production of vitamin D, and perception of the sensations pressure, temperature and pain by receptors.
