Microbiology. A species of gram-negative, aerobic, rod-shaped bacteria widely distributed in soil and water. P. aeruginosa is a major agent of hospital acquired infections which are difficult to treat due to antibiotic resistance. P. aeruginosa produces fluorescent dyes such as the blue pyocyanin and the green fluorescein.
