Cell Biology. An excitable cell specialised for the transmission and processing of electrical impulses. Neurons consist of the cell body, several dendrites, and an axon. Dendrites are elongations of the cell, which transmit impulses towards the cell body, axons transmit impulses from the cell body to another cell. The interface of two neurons is called synapse. The human brain contains about 100 billion neurons.
