Epidemiology. The ratio of the odds of disease in an exposed group over the odds of disease in an unexposed group. The odds ratio is used in the analyses of epidemiological studies and can be interpreted as relative risk if a disease is rare. The ratio will be greater than 1 if there is a possible association between disease and exposure, less than 1 if the exposure is protective and equal to 1 if the exposure carries no risk.
