Haematology. The oxygen-carrying pigment of the erythrocytes. It is a complex protein composed of four globin polypeptide chains and four haeme groups, each containing an iron atome. Each haeme group can carry a molecule of oxygen (O2). The oxygen-loaded form is called oxyhaemoglobin, the form without oxygen deoxyhaemoglobin.
