Communications engineering. A data transmission technique for GSM which uses packet switching. This method cuts the data to be transmitted into small packets which are augmented with information like receiver, sender, etc. and transmitted one by one through time slots not used at the moment. At the receiver the packets are reassembled (similar to the transmission on the internet). With this considerably higher transmission rates are reached than by sending the data stream as a whole through a fixed channel. However the data transmission rate depends on net traffic. GPRS is supported by all mobile phone manufacturers.
