Study type: Medical/biological study (experimental study)

Blood-brain barrier permeability in rats is altered by exposure to magnetic fields associated with magnetic resonance imaging at 1.5 T med./bio.

Published in: Microsc Res Tech 1994; 27 (6): 528-534

Aim of study (acc. to author)

To investigate the effects of MRI exposure on the permeability of blood-brain barriere to a radioactive tracer substance in rats.

Background/further details

In this study radioactive labelled diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid (Gadolinum-DTPA) was used as tracer substance.

Main outcome of study (acc. to author)

MRI exposure under various conditions lead to altered permeability of the blood brain barrier in rats. Sham-exposure results were significantly different during day and night (greater difference than that caused by MRI exposure).
