Entamoeba invadens: influence of 60 Hz magnetic fields on growth and differentiation med./bio.

Published in: Exp Parasitol 2008; 119 (2): 202-206

Aim of study (acc. to author)

To study the effects of 60 Hz sinusoidal magnetic fields at different magnetic flux densities on growth and differentiation of the protozoan Entamoeba invadens.

Background/further details

Throphozoite cultures were exposed for 9 or 10 days to 60 Hz magentic fields. In order to test the combination of metronidazole (a cytotoxic drug against amoebic cells) and 60 Hz magnetic field on throphozoite growth, a co-exposure experiment was conducted with four groups: 1) sham-exposed group, 2) cells treated with metronidazole LD50 (positive control), 3) cells exposed for seven days to 2 mT magnetic fields, and 4) cells treated with 2 mT magnetic field plus metronidazole LD50.

Main outcome of study (acc. to author)

An inhibitory effect on growth (decreased cell densities) was found when throphozoite cultures were exposed to 1.5 and 2 mT. There was no synergistic effect in cultures co-exposed to magnetic fields and metronidazole. Magnetic field exposure (alone) inhibited the encystation process of Entamoeba invadens.
Magentic field exposure of the protozoan Entamoeba invadens altered the growth and encystation process.
