Study type: Medical/biological study (experimental study)

Lymphoblastoid transformation of lymphocytes in vitro after microwave irradiation med./bio.

Published in: Nature 1967; 214 (83): 102-103

Aim of study (acc. to author)

To study the influence of microwaves on mitosis. Lymphoblastoid transformation of lymphocytes was found by chance.

Main outcome of study (acc. to author)

After incubation for 3 days in cultures exposed at a power density of 7 mW/cm² the percentage of transformed cells was twice as high as in control cultures. Similar data were obtained in cultures exposed at a power density of 20 mW/cm². After incubation of 3 days a slight increase in the percentage of macrophages was noted. In some cases sporadic mitoses were observed. After incubation for 5 days similar changes were revealed at both power densities. The percentage of transformed lymphocytes was five times as high as that in control cultures. The percentage of macrophages was also high, and there was 2-3% of mitoses. Fragmented nuclei could be found among the transformed cells.
The data of control experiments showed that the effetcs can be attributed to the effect of microwave irradiation and not to any effect of heating.
