Pharmacology. An alkaloid isolated from the seeds of the Calabar bean (Physostigma venenosum) that is a cholinesterase inhibitor. It also can cross the blood-brain barrier. It is used topically to produce miosis and decrease of intraocular pressure in glaucoma.
