Genetics. Genes which can potentially induce the transformation of normal cells into tumor cells. As proto-oncogenes, these genes are present in normal-growing cells and have essential functions for the control of cell proliferation. Due to a structural and/or regulatory change in a proto-oncogene, the growth control breaks down and a tumor emerges. Triggers may be radiation or chemicals (carcinogens) that cause changes in the heritable information.
