GSM is the worldwide most used mobile phone standard for telephony, data transmission (both packet and circuit switched) and short message service (SMS). Developed as the successor of the first generation (1G, in Germany representative for the A, B and C-Nets), GSM (second generation of mobile communication systems) has served as the basis for the present, digital D- and E-Nets.
GSM telephony operates in different frequency ranges, while there are several GSM modifications for specific applications (e.g. GSM railway).
